It is actually a term that was first coined by a blogger in 2013, and has since been appropriated by young men who ascribe to "red pill" ideology to (proudly) describe themselves as involuntary celibates.
I found that the Barbie movie actually gave an extremely sophisticated take on how this happens within the context of modern-day "feminism," the current impact it is having on the culture wars, and what to do about it.
